Fjällbjörkskogen är en vegetationszon som särskilt präglar de norra fjälltrakterna. I många andra bergskedjor är det barrskog som går högst upp. Så är det även i delar av södra fjällkedjan. I fjällbjörkskogen finns ett mycket rikt fågelliv, både art- och antalsmässigt. Här samsas typiska norrlandssarter såsom blåhake och bergfink med arter som även finns långt söderut i landet, till exempel lövsångare och sävsparv. Den svartvita flugsnapparen är en ganska vanlig häckfågel i fjällbjörkskogen, men som i Ammarnäs befinner sig i randzonen av sin utbredning.
